John Deere 350C and 400C articulated trucks: controls and service

These 350C and 400C records describe haul trucks

John Deere's 2012 Performance Handbook places both machines in its former articulated-dump-truck table, with product prefix BE. The 350C production entry spans 1998–2001; the 400C entry spans 1999–2001. Those dates matter when assessing advertisements or owner accounts bearing the same short model code.

An older tracked 350C loader is a different machine.

The handbook distinguishes empty operating weight, heaped body volume and rated payload. The larger body's volume cannot raise the truck's permitted payload. Keep the 400C's own load rating with its body specification.

The succeeding D-series entries use a different product prefix and different operating data, so their figures should not silently fill gaps in a C-series record.

Transfer-case range and transmission range hold do different work

The original OMT166947 operator manual provides a low-range control for the transfer case and a separate range-hold switch for the transmission. The gear display shows the held range. A demonstration should establish which control is operating; an Allison transmission description alone leaves out that transfer-case function.

The same manual separates the brake, axle, transmission and hydraulic checks. Its refill table gives cooling-system capacity for both trucks, while listing the hydraulic reservoir, transfer case, final drives and axles as different compartments. Engine oil is not a substitute quantity for coolant.

On a used machine, identify the compartment and the applicable manual edition before accepting an old service entry.

The transmission lubricant has a specific approval

Deere's Spring 2013 Oil Sales Guide explicitly includes the 350C and 400C ADTs in the application list for HD SynTran. It identifies the Allison TES-295 specification and approval AN-071006. That is a transmission application, not a blanket instruction to fill every driveline compartment with the same product.

The guide describes this fluid as fully synthetic and intended for demanding Allison service. When reviewing a maintenance invoice, ask for the actual fluid identification and approval instead of accepting “hydraulic oil” as a complete description. Axle gear oil and the steering/body hydraulic reservoir still need their own specifications from the truck's manual.
