John Deere 400G–455G dozers and loader specs

400G: standard and long-track quantities stay separate

The 400G brochure separates its standard crawler from an optional longer frame with an extra lower roller and more shoes. Their track gauge is unchanged. Longer ground contact therefore does not imply wider shoes.

Deere also groups the transmission, steering-clutch housings and final drives in one refill entry; treating that quantity as a final-drive-only fill misreads the schedule.

400G and 455G track tooling is not interchangeable by name

WTC Machinery's original pin-press application chart places the 400G in a sealed-chain row. The 455G appears in separate sealed and sealed-and-lubricated track entries. The 400G and 455G rows specify different pin lengths and pin-tool identifiers.

Even the distinction between pin length and chain pitch matters: those dimensions occupy separate columns. Identify the installed chain construction before ordering pressing tools. A machine's G suffix alone does not establish that its pins, bushings or tooling match another G-series crawler.

450D: identify the blade circuit before testing flow

The 450D's HLR transmission combines four selected speeds with high, low and reverse ranges. That arrangement differs from the 455G loader's four-forward/four-reverse travel table. Deere's 450D technical sheet also distinguishes a large hydraulic pump from a small one.

Its flow figures are test results with stated engine speed and pressure, not interchangeable maximum-delivery claims.

The blade equipment changes the relief specification. Deere separates the 6410 dozer from the 6405 and 6415 arrangements; a pressure copied from the adjacent column can therefore be the wrong target. The sheet separately identifies backhoe crowd, swing and boom circuits.

A weak blade, slow travel and a slow backhoe are different complaints. Record which function fails, its fitted equipment and the applicable circuit before treating them as one pump fault.

450E/6415: blade tilt and the track frame

The 450E/6415 brochure describes an outside-mounted blade with hydraulic tilt and a five-roller track frame. Its separate carrier roller is above the chain. The blade drawing's end-height dimension describes tilt; it is not a chain-pitch measurement.

455G: loader identity and direct-drive controls

Deere's OMT163973 manual identifies the 455G as a crawler loader, with both torque-converter and direct-drive versions. A 455G bucket-capacity entry must not be read as a bulldozer blade capacity. The manual also separates pedal steering from lever steering.

Their brake and steering-clutch behaviour differs, so a control description for one configuration cannot diagnose the other.

The direct-drive version adds a power-control pedal that progressively disengages the transmission. Its decelerator is a separate engine-speed control; an optional declutch function changes what happens near the end of that pedal's travel. Deere specifically warns against substituting that declutch function for the inching pedal on slopes or during truck loading.

Use the operating instructions for the fitted controls before attempting either task.

Instrument drawings change at serial 823919. The STOP warning covers low engine-oil pressure, excessive coolant temperature or low transmission pressure. Filter restriction and charging voltage appear in the separate service-warning group.

A warning's identity matters more than a general report that a light came on.
