Deere 450, 550 and650 P-Tier: engines, tracks and grade control

Deere's450, 550 and 650 P-Tier dozers share a dual-path hydrostatic layout, but the engine, undercarriage and grade-control choices differ. The 450 brochure specifies a DEF-free engine;550 and 650 refill schedules include DEF. For transport and ground-pressure comparisons, distinguish the 450/550 standard and LGP chassis from the 650 XLT and LGP versions.

Separate the engine markets before comparing power

The 450 brochure places its EWX4045 Final Tier4/StageV engine beside a PWX4045 Tier3/StageIIIA alternative. Their published outputs are71hp and78hp. Those are different regional engine columns, not two operating modes of the same supplied engine.

The 450's lack of a DEF refill requirement is explicitly described in the brochure; the old generic DEF monitor row should not be read as evidence that this engine consumes DEF.

The 550's Final Tier4 PWS4045 rating is92hp at2000rpm. Its charge-air cooler distinguishes it from the 450's engine entry. The 650 also uses the PWS4045 in that emissions column, but its104hp rating is at1900rpm.

A common2000rpm heading therefore misidentifies the 650 rating. The three original power figures remain recorded below with each engine's correct speed.

Choose the grading package by what it controls

EZ Grade accompanies electrohydraulic controls and corrects small blade movements as the machine pitches. Slope Control adds a target slope; SmartGrade adds integrated3D GNSS guidance. These are different levels of control.

On the Canadian product description, Live Mode displays slope for manual operation, Target Mode maintains the chosen blade slope, and Joystick Mode maintains the slope from the operator's last input.

SmartGrade Ready includes wiring for a later Topcon or Leica field kit. A ready machine still needs the completing equipment. Deere limits Slope Control and SmartGrade options to PAT blade configurations.

Check blade type, fitted sensors, display and enabled package together before valuing a used machine as a complete3D grading system.

Track length and refill units need their own checks

The undercarriage schedules publish86in of track on the ground for 450 and 550, and92in for 650. LGP changes shoe width and contact area; it does not change those brochure contact lengths. The 650 has seven rollers per side, while450 and 550 have six.

Keep those chassis measurements separate from overall machine length.

All three brochures give the common hydraulic/HST reservoir as70.5L or18.6USgal, including filters. Earlier entries labeled18.6 as quarts on450 and 550. Their correction register preserves the old labels.

Final-drive refill is a separate per-side quantity, so multiplying the reservoir figure by a unit conversion cannot identify the final-drive fill.

Sorting the title words into topics, the most common are transmission and drive (88), hydraulics (59), brakes and steering (45).
