JCB 260T: PowerBoom, service access and engine editions

The early 260T combines vertical lift with a side-entry PowerBoom

JCB's original New Generation brochure identifies the 260T as a vertical-lift machine with an 84 hp Dieselmax engine. The single boom is on the opposite side from the entry door. Its loading geometry provides reach at height without the rear torque-tube arrangement discussed in the brochure.

That physical layout is more useful for identifying the machine than a generic compact-loader advertisement.

Inspect the cab configuration as well as the boom. The early publication distinguishes an open canopy, a heated cab and a cab with factory air conditioning. Enclosed versions use laminated protective glass, while the canopy arrangement has its own half-door and right-side mesh.

A side entry does not establish which glazing or protective equipment is fitted.

Optional multifunction joysticks extend control of hydraulic attachments. The ordinary loader joystick and an attachment's extra command are not the same function, so operate the actual tool during a demonstration. The right overhead panel groups diagnostics, electronic throttle and ignition in this edition.

Record the displayed fault and whether it appears at the panel or only when an attachment is operated.

Service access and later engine schedules

The tilting cab gives access to the power train and hydraulic components. Engine checks use the large rear door, while a separate top-opening hood improves access above the engine and for radiator cleanout. Inspect those access points individually.

A clean rear opening does not show the upper cooling surfaces or the plumbing beneath the cab.

JCB describes O-ring face-seal fittings in this original machine range. During leak inspection, distinguish the fitting connection from a damaged hose and from oil arriving from another compartment; the access layout helps locate the origin. Use the cab support procedure in the machine's manual before entering that service space.

Later range publications show different engine and equipped-weight schedules under the same 260T designation. The later large-platform sheet's TC-55 description must not silently replace the early TC-63/84 hp record. Check the engine plate and publication edition before applying a rating, refill or emissions claim.

The later range brochure also separates Smooth Ride System from optional parallel lift. Ride control allows boom/load movement relative to the chassis, while parallel lift helps keep the attachment level through the lift cycle. A button demonstrating one feature does not prove the other is installed.

Compare those functions with the correct edition's equipment list instead of assigning every later range option to an early machine.
