D155AX-3: the serial break matters inside the powertrain

The original D155AX-3 shop manual separates machines before and after its engine change. Its specifications use different engine identities on opposite sides of the serial break, even though the machine retains the D155AX-3 designation. An engine replacement request therefore needs the tractor serial and the installed engine plate.

The short model name cannot settle the choice.

The manual also distinguishes the transmission's hydro-mechanical components from the hydraulic steering drive. Planetary gearing, the transmission's multiple-disc clutches and the HSS motor are separate parts of that arrangement. Its component specifications identify different hydraulic pumps and motors by function.

A steering complaint and a failure to engage travel should not automatically become an order for the same pump.

D155AX-5: two control arrangements share the badge

Komatsu's introductory training material compares an earlier D155AX-5 with a revised machine. The revision adopts an adjustable hydraulic fan in place of belt drive, a wider cab with damper mounting, and electronic PCCS travel control. Preset travel selection and automatic downshifting are added control functions.

None of those differences can be inferred from an advertisement that says only “D155AX-5.”

In the same presentation, HSS has its own hydraulic pump. A turn changes the relative speeds of the tracks while retaining power to both. That explains the difference from clutch-and-brake steering, which releases one side.

Counter-rotation is a further HSS function. The steering label does not identify the entire transmission.

Read the blade, ripper and refill conditions together

The European D155AX-5 brochure publishes separate blade-only and blade-plus-ripper dimensions. Its headline operating weight includes a strengthened semi-U blade, giant ripper, cab and ROPS. Removing the rear attachment changes the configuration being compared.

Likewise, each final drive has its own refill quantity; the single-side figure is not the combined requirement.

The brochure distinguishes ordinary and strengthened blades, with different attachment weights. Single-tilt and tilt/pitch versions differ too. Its central service station and monitor provide filter and fault information, while the enclosed blade-tilt piping runs inside the push arm.

Inspect the fitted front and rear equipment before treating an apparent weight or dimension discrepancy as a mistake.
