Komatsu D85EX/PX-15: engine editions, tracks and blade control

A D85EX-15 label does not settle the engine edition

The October 2004 SEBM029105 shop-manual cover identifies an SA6D125E-3 engine for its D85EX-15 and D85PX-15 applications. The September 2010 European sales brochure also uses the unsuffixed D85EX/PX-15 name, but specifies the SAA6D125E-5 common-rail engine with cooled EGR. These are different published engine identities under similar machine names.

An unsuffixed listing is insufficient evidence for ordering injectors or applying a fuel-system procedure.

The later European brochure describes an electrical link between the engine-speed dial, decelerator and engine controller. Its preset travel modes select forward and reverse gears for repeated passes. Automatic downshift responds to load and can be disabled at the monitor.

Those controls belong to the documented electronic arrangement; the older manual's cover alone does not prove identical controls on every earlier serial number.

The PX changes the track support, not just the blade

In the European EX/PX drawing, the PX idler is farther forward, extending track contact length; its shoes and track gauge are wider. The PX arrangement targets soft ground. Track gauge measures between track centerlines.

It is not outside track width, blade width or the distance between track-link pins. Earlier reference entries that labelled gauge-sized figures as track pitch are therefore identified separately from the manufacturer's measurements.

The EX drawing's main length ends at the rear of the tractor, with ripper projection shown as a separate dimension. Blade choice changes the length at the front. Quoting the ripper projection as total machine length, or the blade-equipped length as bare-tractor length, creates a false transport envelope.

Use the drawing boundaries before adding the installed attachment's projection.

Mechanical angle and hydraulic tilt are different adjustments

Komatsu's straight MAPT blade mounts on a U-frame. Its angle is changed mechanically; blade tilt and lift are operated from the seat. A listing that calls this arrangement an angle blade has not established hydraulic angle control.

The straight tilt, semi-U and U blades also have different cutting-edge spans and capacities. A single blade-width entry cannot describe that whole option list.

The European hydraulic specification includes ripper allowance in its stated blade-hydraulic capacity. The separate March 2013 E0 publication lists dozer refill and additional ripper volume independently. Neither entry should be transplanted into the other document without its equipment basis.

That E0 sheet also distinguishes tractor weight from weight with blade, cab and specified ripper equipment. Its lower tractor-only entry is not the configured dozer's operating mass.
