Komatsu PC160LC-7 and PC228USLC-3: clearance, attachment circuits and engine editions

PC228USLC-3 clearance includes the front and mirrors

The January2010 European PC228USLC-3 brochure distinguishes rear swing from the implement's minimum swing radius. Its rounded upperstructure reduces both front-corner and rear protrusion, but the mirrors extend beyond the corresponding bare-body dimensions. A clearance plan based only on the counterweight radius leaves out parts of the machine.

The sliding convex cab door is relevant in the same confined position. It opens without the outward sweep of a hinged door. That helps with access alongside an obstruction, but it does not make the excavator's complete working envelope equal to its track width.

Check the front equipment, mirrors and actual attachment together.

On this edition, a two-piece boom and a blade are separate options. The operating-weight table gives the two-piece front a different mass and lists additional blade weight separately. Its blade option is paired with a stated shoe arrangement.

A short-tail machine's transport mass therefore still needs its equipment list.

The auxiliary valve is only part of an attachment installation

Komatsu's PC160LC-7 European brochure lists an additional service valve, while further circuits and piping remain equipment choices. Its Advanced Attachment Control offers selectable flow and stored settings when equipped. Finding a valve in the main block does not establish that a used machine has the required lines and controls at the tool.

The PC228USLC-3 equipment list is more specific about its auxiliary arrangement. It describes a full-flow two-way service spool with attachment lines and a pedal. For the mono boom it also describes preparation for another half-flow service spool, with piping terminating at the boom foot.

Preparation at that location is different from a complete second circuit reaching an attachment. Trace the installed lines before choosing a rotating tool.

Read the power test standard beside the rating

The older European PC160LC-7 document specifies the four-cylinder SAA4D102E-2, whereas the PC228USLC-3 sheet identifies a six-cylinder SAA6D107E-1. The latter separates ISO14396 output from ISO9249 net engine power. Comparing a cover headline against another machine's net-power row would mix test standards.

Keep the rating method and engine identity attached to each value.

The smaller machine's VHMS description also distinguishes electrical trouble records from mechanical abnormality records and can display several live measurements together. The larger machine's service layout identifies remote filter and drain points behind specific side covers. Those are useful inspection details for these editions; they are not evidence that an unfamiliar machine's monitor or hose routing matches merely because its model begins with PC.

PC228USLC-3: short tail, separate front envelope

The PC228USLC-3's rear counterweight is compact, but its front attachment still needs clearance. Komatsu's comparison drawing gives separate radii for the tail and folded implement, then shows their combined turning envelope. Short tail swing does not mean every part of the machine stays above the tracks.

A barrier close to the counterweight is only one of the clearances to inspect when choosing a road-working position.

The European brochure also separates a mono boom from a two-piece boom. Their equipped weights differ even with the same arm length and shoe width. A blade adds another documented weight; it is not included just because the machine's badge appears in the table.

The hydraulic tank refill entry is likewise a named compartment, not an assertion about every hose and cylinder. These distinctions help reconcile an apparently similar listing whose mass or fluid quantity differs. Source: Komatsu PC228USLC-3 European brochure.

PC160LC-7: select the attachment setup at the monitor

On the European PC160LC-7, the monitor offers Power, Economy and Breaker settings plus a lifting mode. PowerMax is a temporary digging-force function associated with Power mode; the lifting setting instead changes the lifting-pressure arrangement. Selecting one symbol does not make those two jobs equivalent.

Use the mode and attachment settings that match the installed equipment.

Its attachment-control option provides adjustable presets for changeovers. The brochure describes reduced attachment flow when work equipment and an attachment operate together, preserving movement of the front. A slower attachment during combined movement therefore needs to be considered alongside the selected flow and operating combination.

The PC160 also has automatic two-speed travel, whereas the PC228 schedule lists three travel selections. Check that distinction before treating the two machines' monitor or travel behavior as interchangeable. The specified PC160 operating mass includes its arm, bucket, operator and full fuel, with separate columns for each boom arrangement. The PC160 service layout places the engine-oil filter remotely and provides a fuel drain valve. Inspect those access points and the water separator when reviewing evidence of regular servicing. Source: Komatsu PC160LC-7 European maintenance layout.

The PC228 US-unit brochure has different hydraulic-tank and swing-torque entries from the European publication. Keep those editions separate when ordering service information. The European tank quantity should not be converted into gallons and silently substituted for the US-unit tank figure. Source: Komatsu PC228USLC-3 US-unit technical schedule.
