Komatsu PC160LC-8–PC228USLC-8: front and market choices
Conventional front choices and the short-tail PC228USLC-8
The European PC160LC-8 brochure offers a choice of mono boom or articulated two-piece boom. Its arm options also change the working envelope. With the longest listed arm, the mono boom reaches deeper, while the two-piece front has a smaller minimum front swing radius.
A contractor choosing between those arrangements is trading excavation geometry against placement near an obstruction, even before bucket size enters the comparison.
Komatsu's bucket schedule makes material density part of that decision. The largest light-material bucket shown for the shorter arms is not the permitted choice throughout the table: the longest arm has a smaller maximum in that density row. Heavier material calls for the smaller listed bucket across the arm choices.
A headline bucket capacity therefore does not establish a suitable combination for every boom, arm and material. Use the schedule for the fitted front.
A PC228USLC-8 solves a different space problem. The North American publication describes rounded cab corners that follow the counterweight's turning envelope, plus a convex sliding door that can open in restricted space. Its rear swing radius and its minimum implement radius are separate measurements.
Clearance for the counterweight alone will not establish clearance for the raised or folded boom. The brochure's roadway illustration should be read with both envelopes in mind.
The PC228's monitor also distinguishes one-way breaker flow from two-way attachment flow. The operator can adjust those rates through the display, while lifting mode changes hydraulic pressure. A temporary Power Max digging boost has its own time limit; it does not replace the lifting chart or create an unrestricted continuous setting.
These are different functions despite sharing the same monitor.
Regional publications explain some apparently conflicting specifications. The European PC160LC-8 schedule includes the two-piece-boom weight and front options, while the opened Asia publication presents another equipped-weight range. On the latter, a feature page names five working modes but a specification row says four.
That internal inconsistency is retained as a document limitation. Likewise, the North American PC228USLC-8's weight includes its specified arm, bucket and shoes; a lighter regional listing is not evidence that those fitted components weigh the same. Establish the machine's market and front before planning its transport.
