Komatsu PC220-6 EXCEL to PC270LC-6: identification and controls

EXCEL and the longer LC undercarriage need separate identification

Komatsu's Edition 23 handbook lists both the PC220-6 EXCEL and PC220LC-6 EXCEL. The short machine's standard shoe is narrower, and the LC combines a wider gauge with longer ground contact. Those differences matter when comparing pressure, loading space and transport width.

“PC220 dash six” is too imprecise an identification for that comparison.

The same handbook places the EXCEL flywheel rating under SAE horsepower and DIN metric-horsepower headings. Those are two expressions of the stated engine output, not evidence of a second engine option. Keep the unit standard attached to the power entry; the earlier gross-power labels should not be read as a separate manufacturer gross rating.

For the LC EXCEL lift chart, Komatsu specifies the boom, bucket and shoes before listing loads by arm and working position. A chart with a bucket included has a different starting basis from a bare-arm chart. Establish that basis before subtracting or adding attachment weight.

A later monitor's functions should not be assumed on an EXCEL

Komatsu's PC220-7 training comparison identifies the EXCEL's lamp display, single travel-speed specification and mechanically operated fuel control separately from the later machine. Its comparison also distinguishes maintenance reminders, fault-history memory and attachment-flow adjustment. A photograph of an illuminated lamp panel therefore does not establish that it can supply the later model's stored diagnostic information.

Check the control hardware on the offered machine. Ask for its own manual and fault interpretation, preserving the full EXCEL designation. Applying a dash-seven monitor procedure to the older lamp display would send the inspection toward functions the comparison does not show on the EXCEL.

PC270LC-6: distinguish pump delivery, service-valve flow and fault memory

The North American PC270LC-6 brochure gives separate flow figures for its main pumps and its first, second and third service valves. Those entries describe different parts of the system. Using the largest pump total as an attachment-line rating would bypass the service-valve limits that the document lists separately.

Its working modes include Finishing, which reduces arm-in speed, and Lifting, which uses a different pressure-and-speed arrangement. The joystick's Power Up and Speed Down choices also differ: the power burst is timed, while the slower setting operates while the button is held. Record the setting when describing a sluggish or force-limited movement.

The monitor separates a current user-code display from stored trouble data and live operation data. A fault that is absent during a brief viewing may still need its recorded history examined. The brochure describes those functions; it does not diagnose a particular used excavator or establish that its sensors and wiring remain intact.
