CASE 580 Super M+ and 590 Super M loader configurations
Why the Series 3 Plus hydraulic arrangement matters
The Super M+ Series 3's variable-volume arrangement needs a load-sense signal to increase pump delivery. The factory hydraulic training document describes low standby flow when no function is selected, followed by pump output that responds to the highest active load. A low neutral-flow reading therefore does not establish that the pump has failed.
Diagnosis needs the circuit state and the applicable pressure test, not just the maximum catalog flow.
Steering and the optional bucket coupler receive priority flow through the loader valve's inlet section. The remaining delivery serves the work circuits. The training diagram also distinguishes circuit protection from the main load-sense relief, and explains that turning Ride Control on removes loader down pressure.
Unexpected down-pressure behavior deserves a switch-position check before a pump is condemned. These details concern the documented variable-volume pilot system, not every earlier M-generation machine. Source: CNH 2008 Series 3 variable-volume pilot hydraulic training text.
580 Super M+ and 590 Super M: check the actual package
The 2008 brochure identifies pressure-compensated piston hydraulics specifically on the 580 Super M+ and 590 Super M+ models. Its ordinary 590 Super M entry should not be silently given the Plus model's pump description. Likewise, Ride Control is standard on the Plus package but optional elsewhere in the range.

The later operator manual lists separate front-axle center-bowl and wheel-end quantities for the 580 Super M+. They are separate service compartments. For hydraulic oil it also distinguishes the 580 Super M/Plus group from the larger 590 group and separates an Extendahoe system from the reservoir.

- Viscous fan and transmissions. The brochure says the Power-Shift versions of the Super M models have a viscous fan drive that runs only when needed for maximum net horsepower, and that buyers can choose a four-speed synchro-mesh transmission or the optional Power-Shift with automatic up and down shifting on 4WD Super M models. - What a Red Power forum asked about a 580 Super M. An April 2024 Red Power Magazine thread has a buyer asking what to watch for on a 6,000-hour 580 Super M with a small head gasket leak and seeping cylinder rods, and a Farmall technician replied that of all the brands he has worked on the 580 series was the most straightforward, simple and honest machine. - Forward clutch pack failure on a Super M. A Heavy Equipment Forums owner reports his 580 Super M stopped pulling forward after two days of use while reverse worked, suspected the forward clutch pack, and was told to diagnose the transmission thoroughly first because a clogged suction screen or a broken circlip in the control valve can give similar symptoms. The same owner had been climbing a steep grade with a full loader in first gear with 4x4 engaged and was told by a former transmission rebuilder that using 4x4 other than in mud will burn up the transmission.
