CASE 680H: specifications, starting symptoms and boom transport behavior

Three different 680H symptoms, not one repair

A November 2015 owner discussion began with a 680H that died on an incline. The owner could not see fuel in the line and later reported that an external pump allowed a brief restart and repositioning. Another run ended after about fifteen minutes.

The subsequent report included white smoke, low coolant, new batteries and changed filters.

Those observations do not identify one failed component. The owner also reported rubbing inside the starter. A reply pointed out the useful distinction: a weak starter can affect cranking, but it does not by itself explain an engine stopping after it is running.

Separate the running failure from the later cranking complaint when describing this machine to a mechanic.

These initial posts do not establish a completed repair. Keep the incline, duration of running, smoke and coolant observations together; reducing the account to “replace the starter” would discard the symptoms that made diagnosis uncertain.

No cab power despite charged batteries

A different owner, posting in July 2018, described charged batteries but no ignition, lights or instruments. The owner had already cleaned grounds and could establish power at the starter. The replies examined the cab's supply path: harness connections, grounds and circuit breakers shown in the posted diagrams.

Power reaching the starter did not prove that the instrument and ignition feed was intact. For a similar inspection, record which circuits remain alive and whether the whole cab is dark. That is a more precise starting description than “the battery is good.” The short thread contains suggestions, without a confirmed final repair, so it does not demonstrate a recurring 680H defect.

Boom bounce confined to the transport arc

In an October 2015 thread, the boom reportedly dug normally and showed no external leak, but bounced during the last two or three inches of retraction toward the transport lock. That limited position mattered. Replies initially considered cylinder damage; participants with CASE service experience instead discussed the over-center transport geometry and secondary relief action.

The discussion does not prove that every bouncing boom is healthy. A machine that drifts or loses force throughout the digging range presents a different symptom from the reported final transport movement. Describe the exact arc and lock engagement, and use the 680H operator procedure; do not force the boom into its lock or attempt an unsupported repair beneath it.
