Cat 789 specifications

The 3516E 789 needs a body and power configuration check

The next-generation 789 introduced in 2022 uses the 3516E engine. Its emissions arrangement and selected power rating matter when matching an existing haul fleet. The older 789C has a different engine and control generation; the shared truck number does not make its service quantities interchangeable.

Power selection is separate from emissions equipment

Caterpillar's launch publication distinguishes the fuel-optimized engine from the SCR-equipped version for the named emissions markets. Both power choices are available: the lower rating can match existing fleet performance, while the higher rating targets faster cycles. Record the actual selection; the largest advertised rating is not proof of a truck's configuration.

The launch also describes APECS maintaining momentum through transmission shifts. Its optional Auto Hoist controls engine speed while raising the body. Those are separate functions: an automatic transmission does not establish that the hoist option is fitted.

For maintenance planning, the modular HVAC assembly and removable radiator arrangement have different service purposes. Check their condition and service records separately from the engine's power setting.

Caterpillar September 2022 release 615PR22: emissions, power selections, shifting, optional hoist and modular service components

Larger tires do not increase the published payload in the 2022 table

The technical publication gives the same rated gross machine weight for its tire configurations but a heavier chassis with the larger tires. Its nominal payload is correspondingly lower. Do not combine the larger-tire chassis with the standard-tire payload when assessing a loading plan.

The original dimension sheet labels the wheelbase as 5,700 mm with the HP body shown. The inherited 57,000 mm entry is rejected. Wheelbase describes axle spacing; it does not replace the separate overall-width and body-raised dimensions needed for clearance planning.

Original 2022 3516E technical publication, pp1 and3: tire-conditioned weights and HP-body dimension drawing

HP body volume belongs to an identified body arrangement

The July 2022 feature sheet identifies the HP body's heaped volume as 143 cubic metres, or 187 cubic yards, at the stated heap standard. The earlier unitless 187 entry is incomplete. The Dual Slope body's volume from another brochure is a different body configuration.

Original AEXQ3506, July 2022, p4: High Performance body capacity, SAE 2:1 and 100% fill factor

The 2024 HP-body document explains its curved front and side transitions, floating bolsters and spring plates. The design addresses carryback and stressed joints; those features are more useful to inspect than a body name in an advertisement. Its dump-clearance note explicitly assumes standard tires and changes with larger tires.

That body document lists availability across 789 vintages. This is fitment coverage, not evidence that an older 789C originally left the factory with this body. Identify the installed body and liner before transferring a capacity or clearance figure.

History and service record of 789

  • Caterpillar's first 150-ton-class truck. The 789 line began in 1986 as Caterpillar's first model in the 150-ton payload class, built to reduce the haulage bottlenecks large open-pit mines were running into as pit operations scaled up. Grokipedia, Caterpillar 789.
  • Weight advantage over rivals. Caterpillar markets the 789 as the most popular 193-tonne (213-ton) truck in mining, built around an empty-machine-weight advantage that lets it haul more payload per load than competing trucks of the same gross weight.
