History and service record of D10

Release in 1977. Caterpillar's own archive says it released the D10 in 1977 after years of prototypes and patents; its revamped undercarriage with an elevated sprocket made it more durable, longer lasting and more powerful than the tractors before it. Development. Trade-press history says Caterpillar began serious design work on the D10 in 1969, in response to demand for a tractor bigger than the D9G, officially unveiled it to the public in September 1977 and made the first deliveries in the first quarter of 1978. A really big tractor: the Caterpillar D10, Quarrying & Mining Magazine.
Demand. A Wikipedia-derived history says the first pilot D10 was shown at a Caterpillar corporate meeting in July 1973, and that nearly 1,000 D10s were built at East Peoria, Illinois, between 1978 and 1986. Caterpillar D10, Wikipedia mirror on everything.explained.today.
A renumbering in 1986. With the N-series tractors of 1986-87 Caterpillar pushed its larger model numbers up by one, so the D10N replaced the D9L and a new D11N replaced the D10. Caterpillar D10, Wikipedia mirror on everything.explained.today.
Waiting list. Trade-press history says sales of the original D10 were so strong that Caterpillar had a waiting list for new machines. A really big tractor: the Caterpillar D10, Quarrying & Mining Magazine.
