Cat D5 specifications

The D5 arrangement matters more than a single headline weight

Caterpillar lists the current D5 with several undercarriage and blade arrangements. The low-ground-pressure VPAT configuration carries the headline operating weight; the standard VPAT, fine-grading and push-arm arrangements have separate weights and ground pressures. A transport calculation needs the fitted arrangement, not an average of those entries.

The push-arm version uses a semi-universal blade, while the VPAT configurations provide a different blade arrangement for grading. The product page also identifies the current D5 as the successor to the D6N. Older machines advertised under a D5 name should not inherit this model’s C7.1 engine specification merely because the badge matches.

Its automatic transmission lets the operator choose a desired travel speed while the powertrain manages shifting. “Three-speed” describes the transmission; it does not mean that the operator must manually select a gear for each part of the pass.

Straight-travel assistance and following a design line are different tasks

Cat’s Steer Assist instructions distinguish ordinary straight-heading control from Steer Assist 3D. The basic feature holds the chosen heading after the operator releases the steering command. The 3D feature instead requires Grade with 3D, a loaded design and a selected guidance line.

A machine described as attachment-ready does not thereby have every grade-control function enabled.

For the 3D function, the operator selects the guidance line, engages automatic operation and brings the blade tip inside the system’s capture range. The guidance setting also determines whether reverse travel stays straight or follows the design line. Those are settings to demonstrate on the actual D5 when buying a technology package.

Manual steering or blade commands can override the assistance temporarily. After the manual command ends, the system can resume assistance. Confirm that behaviour with the installed package and instructions; a display showing a slope is not evidence that automatic design-line steering is fitted.
