Cat 973 specifications

Separate the new 973 from the 973K and historical 973 listings

Caterpillar's March 2024 release identifies the C9.3B-powered 973 as the replacement for the 973K. That is the modern machine described by the current specification here. A historical advertisement carrying only the 973 family name does not establish that it has the same engine, cab electronics or attachment arrangement.

The release explains that transmission steering and bucket control each have alternative layouts. Selecting joystick steering does not establish whether lift and dump use a joystick or separate implement levers. Review both arrangements when comparing operator familiarity or a particular control complaint.

Its cab display presents a rear-camera image and mainfall/cross-slope information. Those functions answer visibility and attitude questions. The optional bucket-weighing system is a separate feature; the presence of the display is not proof that Payload is installed and operating.

Caterpillar's claimed fuel reduction is a comparison with the K family, while its Performance bucket productivity statement has a specified bucket comparison. Neither is a promised result for an arbitrary used machine working different material. Retain that scope when estimating a loading cycle rather than treating a percentage as guaranteed output.

The steel-mill package has an explicit heat-exposure condition

The product description separates ordinary loader equipment from a steel-mill arrangement with thermal cab protection, insulated components and a high-temperature undercarriage. A slag bucket alone does not supply those protections. Establish the fitted arrangement before treating an advertised loader as suitable for furnace work.

For that specialised package Caterpillar recommends hot-slag exposure of less than fifteen minutes in each hour, with cooling between cycles. It says actual work and cooling timing vary by site. This is an exposure condition to retain in planning, rather than permission to operate continuously because the machine has a heat-resistant cab.

Its dimensional note identifies the general-purpose bucket with a bolt-on full edge. The overall width without a bucket is separately stated. A landfill, slag or Performance bucket therefore needs its own installed dimensions when checking access or transport; the bare-machine width does not settle the equipped width.

The standard, LGP and waste-handler rows also carry separate weights and ground pressures. Match those rows to the undercarriage and guarding offered, instead of quoting whichever weight happens to be lowest.
