John Deere 510, 670 and 870 P-Tier excavators: fronts, cooling and transport

These are the large P-Tier excavators

The machines compared here are Deere's 510, 670 and 870 P-Tier excavators. Their abbreviated numbers also occur on older tractors, backhoes and graders. An 870 compact-tractor review does not describe the 870 P-Tier's swing system, and a 670B tandem-chain discussion concerns a grader.

Those older accounts remain identified by their actual machine type. They cannot establish fault frequency or owner satisfaction for this excavator comparison.

The 510 uses Deere's PowerTech 6090, while the 670 and 870 use Isuzu's 6WG1-FT4. The larger pair share engine displacement but have different outputs and main-pump deliveries. Shared engine identity consequently does not make the excavators interchangeable for a production estimate.

The boom, arm, bucket and swing cycle still determine how much of that installed power the task can use.

Cooling and guidance equipment separate the 510 from the larger pair

The 510 brochure describes electric cooling fans. The 670 specification instead lists two hydraulically driven cooling fans; the 870 has its own hydraulic fan installation. Their refill capacities and drive arrangements should not be combined into one service assumption.

Reversing functions assist cooler cleaning, but the fitted system must match the manual used for troubleshooting.

On the 510, grade-management choices range from guidance to integrated SmartGrade control. These are options, not capabilities established by the base machine name. Check what the display and installed sensors actually support before pricing a used machine as a grade-control package.

The brochure also distinguishes a standard heated suspension seat from the optional actively cooled leather seat. A premium cab description in a listing is insufficient proof of either option.

John Deere 510 P-Tier brochure ME510PAU, April 2025

The 670 and 870 have different working and transport widths

With the specified wide shoes, the 670 and 870 brochures give separate track positions for operation and transport. Reducing the gauge changes the envelope; it does not turn the narrower transport position into the working lift-chart configuration. Specify which position the haulier's dimension represents.

The boom's folded height and the chosen arm also remain part of the route-clearance calculation.

Mass-excavating fronts exchange reach for digging force. The 870's short ME boom and arm have their own operating-dimension and force columns, separate from its longer general-purpose fronts. Selecting the deepest-reaching front and the highest force from different columns would describe a machine the brochure does not offer.

A refill-label error also needs attention: the 870's hydraulic reservoir is 500 litres, printed as 132.1 US gallons, while the complete system holds 1042 litres. The earlier 528.4-gallon tank entry is inconsistent with that factory table and remains labelled in the history. A reservoir refill and a complete drained system are different service operations.
