John Deere 690C–790E LC: pump systems and long-front limits
690C open-center hydraulics and bucket choices
The 690C uses an open-center hydraulic system with tandem gear pumps driven through an isolator from the engine. Its pilot controls operate the digging functions, and a left-console lever deactivates the controls. This is a different pumping arrangement from the later variable-displacement system in the 790E.
Deere's 690C bucket chart relates bucket size to material density. Its earthmoving, sand-and-gravel, limestone and blasted-rock entries do not recommend one universal bucket. Heavy-duty and regular buckets also have different weights and digging-force schedules.
A bucket selected for light material cannot be assumed suitable for dense rock just because the pin connection fits.
The original lift tables distinguish boom lifting with the arm held from arm lifting with the boom held. They also separate over-end and over-side positions. Optional auxiliary counterweights alter stability-limited ratings; they do not simply raise every hydraulic limit.
The brochure's firm-ground condition and allowance for hook and cable weight still apply when reading those tables.

The 790E LC long front combines closed-center, load-sensing hydraulics with engine-speed sensing and microprocessor control. Its keypad lets the operator override preset hydraulic modes and engine settings. The engine's wet replaceable liners and piston-spray cooling are further differences from treating this entire comparison as one shared engine installation.
The long-front lift chart specifies its shoe width, counterweight, undercarriage and bucket, with accessories included in the lifted load. Narrower shoes reduce over-side and over-end ratings by different amounts. Read the appropriate chart direction; maximum reach is not a lifting rating at that radius.
There is also a bucket-weight mismatch within the original sheet: its lift and operating-weight assumptions name a lighter bucket than the separate bucket specification. Do not carry a lift value across to that heavier bucket unchanged. The larger heaped bucket has a stated material-density restriction.
Confirm the actual bucket and matched load chart before using the long front for lifting; the arm's extra reach does not remove those conditions.
