John Deere 550G LGP to 650J XLT specifications

G-series powershift and H/J hydrostatics require different checks

Deere’s G-series specification sheet separates direct-drive and torque-converter installations within the same model. The 650G gross rating and travel-speed schedule change with that choice. A transmission description that just says “powershift” leaves out information needed to interpret both the engine and speed columns.

The G sheet identifies a turbocharged engine for the 550G and 650G. Its naturally aspirated alternative belongs to the 450G direct-drive column, not to these machines. The earlier comparison mixed that column into two engine records; the corrections below retain the former entries for identification.

G-series steering uses oil-cooled, modulated clutches with wet-band brakes. During a purchase inspection, distinguish directional gear engagement from the response of each steering control. A machine that selects forward and reverse can still need steering work.

The G drive design cannot be diagnosed from instructions for a hydrostatic 650H.

The 650H steers through separate pump-and-motor paths

The 650H specification describes a variable-displacement piston pump and a two-speed motor for each track. Hydrostatic steering eliminates the G-style steering clutches and brakes. Counterrotation and power turns belong to that drive arrangement; they are not extra gears in a powershift transmission.

Deere also distinguishes dynamic braking from the spring-applied parking brake. Its transmission oil reservoir and implement hydraulic reservoir have separate sight gauges. Checking one gauge cannot establish the condition or oil level of both circuits.

Ask which circuit an oil sample came from before comparing it with a seller’s description of weak travel or slow blade response.

A 650J rating needs its engine edition

The earlier French J-series publication identifies Tier II 650J LT and XLT tractors separately from the higher-rated LGP. The later English brochure identifies Tier 3 equipment and gives the higher rating to all three configurations. The retained early LT/XLT power figures are therefore not automatically errors.

Match the engine plate and emissions label before substituting the later specification.

The J-series decelerator can reduce travel speed alone or reduce both travel speed and engine speed. Its selected mode changes what the operator feels during a demonstration. Total Machine Control also adjusts steering response and direction-change behavior.

Check the settings before treating a different response from another J-series tractor as proof of a mechanical defect.
