Mitsubishi MG230 to MG430: inching, tandem noise and model editions

MG430 inching and downshifting do different jobs

Mitsubishi's MG430 operation manual, publication 99170-40150, applies from chassis 4GA00962. It uses the inching pedal for fine control when moving away or stopping. The pedal is not the speed-change control.

During downshifting, the manual calls for the service brake and one gear at a time; using inching to manage that descent can allow engine overspeed. A grader described as having a slipping transmission needs an inspection of the actual control response before that description becomes a repair diagnosis.

The MG430 troubleshooting chart separates continuous chatter from irregular travel noise. For chatter it lists oil level or viscosity, bevel-gear mesh and bearing preload or wear. Irregular noise has another list, including damaged gears or bearings, loose bevel-gear bolts and elongated tandem chains.

These are possible causes to investigate, not proof that an entire axle must be replaced. Record when the sound occurs and which tandem it comes from.

The oil checks are in separate housings

The same MG430 manual gives distinct checks for the rear axle, tandem-drive cases and circle reverse gear case. The rear-axle check uses its sight gauge after the machine has been stopped on level ground. The tandem and circle cases use their own fill openings to establish level.

Checking the axle does not establish the level in a tandem housing. A seller's general claim that all oils were checked should be followed with questions about those individual compartments.

MG330 names also appear on later Hidromek machines

The September 2020 Hidromek MG330 leaflet describes a six-speed forward/reverse planetary powershift and a tandem gear pump with an open-centre circuit. Its final-drive description specifically says without differential. Those details belong to that publication.

They cannot establish the differential equipment or hydraulic layout of every earlier Mitsubishi MG230, MG330 or MG430.

Dimensions require the same edition discipline. Hidromek's drawing distinguishes the height of the cab from a lower body measurement, and its weight definition includes liquids and the operator while excluding optional equipment. An overall length with a rear attachment is a different transport question from the bare machine's length.

Match the drawing to the grader being collected.

There is a separate equipment distinction in Mitsubishi's E-series brochure: MG330-E is expressly described with a blade-slip clutch. That device releases under an excessive blade load; it should not be assumed present on an unsuffixed MG330 or every MG230 merely because the machines share a maker. Inspect the circle drive and establish the serial-specific arrangement before pricing a damaged blade drive.
