John Deere 204L to 344L specifications

Choose clearance, steering and attachment geometry across these Deere compacts

This comparison includes both L-series loaders and the earlier 244K-II and 324K. Their model numbers do not establish one shared steering or attachment arrangement. Start with the entrance height and the load's placement height, then identify the coupler and linkage fitted to the particular loader.

204L and 304L prioritize low entry height

Deere's original low-profile brochure compares the 204L and 304L directly with the taller 244K-II. Their purpose-built open canopy is an alternative to the enclosed heated and air-conditioned cab, not simply a cab with its windows removed. Measure the actual roof and tire configuration against the building entrance.

These two loaders steer through frame articulation and use limited-slip differentials. Do not attribute the larger loaders' rear-wheel steering arrangement to them. Optional creep control lets a broom move slowly while retaining hydraulic flow; that is a different demonstration from reducing engine speed and watching the broom slow down.

Their specification schedules separate bucket and fork ratings, coupler types and canopy/cab weights. A pallet-handling decision needs the fork schedule with its load-position and tilt-cylinder restrictions. The bucket's straight tipping load is not a fork payload.

The K-series pair adds rear-wheel steering and a different coupler choice

The 244K-II and 324K combine frame articulation with mechanically linked rear-wheel steering. Their inching pedal reduces travel speed while maintaining engine speed for hydraulic work. Check both steering response and inching during an attachment demonstration; a tight turn alone does not establish the hydraulic response under load.

Deere lists a pin-type hydraulic coupler as standard and a skid-steer-compatible Quik-Tatch arrangement as an option in this K-series brochure. Identify which is present before assuming an existing attachment will connect. The 324K High-Lift configuration also has its own reach and capacity schedule.

Its benefit for stacking lighter materials does not give it the standard linkage's rating at every position.

344L controls and cooling need their own inspection

The later L-series brochure describes load-sensing AutoShift and makes throttle lock and creep control optional. Its auxiliary mini-joystick is optional on the 344L, despite being standard on the smaller 244L and 324L covered by that document. Do not transfer those smaller L-model equipment lists to the K-models in this comparison.

For the 344L, inspect the cooler access and establish whether the optional reversing fan is fitted. Easy core access and powered reverse cleaning are separate features. The High-Lift option also changes the loading geometry, so request the applicable attachment schedule before choosing it for a particular truck or hopper.
