John Deere 84, 244E and 244H: transmissions, inching and bucket conditions

The 84's torque converter gives way to hydrostatic travel

Deere's 1987 84 booklet describes a torque converter and PowerShift transmission with three forward gears and one reverse gear. Its single-phase converter is separate from the gear-type loader pump. The articulated chassis has inboard planetary final drives, wet service brakes and a hand-operated parking disc on the transmission output.

The 84's general-purpose, light-material and multipurpose buckets have different tipping loads and dump clearances. The general-purpose bucket's actual dump clearance is lower than the incorrect entry previously shown here. The same attachment table changes operating weight when a cab becomes a canopy or ballast is added.

Neither the widest bucket nor the largest volume is automatically suitable for the densest material.

The 244E inching pedal acts on hydrostatic flow first

The 244E operator manual distinguishes initial inching-pedal movement from the later braking movement. Initial travel reduces hydrostatic pump flow, allowing slower ground movement while engine speed remains high; farther pedal movement applies the service brakes. A report of slow travel needs to include pedal position, not just engine speed.

Deere also provides separate serial-number records for the machine, engine, transmission and HST pump. The manual's serial boundary matters when ordering parts: its cover identifies the later machine range and names the earlier manual it replaces. A replaced pump may require its own identification.

The 244H's reservoir and bucket conditions stay distinct

The 244H retains hydrostatic speed control coupled to a two-speed PowerShift unit. Deere lists the same forward and reverse speeds in each range, unlike the 84's separate reverse limit. Its parking brake is spring-applied and hydraulically released; the specification does not describe the 84's hand-operated disc.

The H sheet distinguishes a light-material bucket from a general-purpose bucket. Dump height, breakout, tipping and operating weight each follow that bucket choice. The hydraulic reservoir, PowerShift refill and each axle's oil quantity are separate entries, so the reservoir figure is not a refill for every transmission component.
